As the cool weather finally makes it down to my neck of the woods, I can’t help but want to be sipping on a mug of hot yummy goodness in the morning, in the evening…well, honestly, all day long! I drink my coffee in the mornings. And, often my 3 1/2 year old daughter pretends to be drinking coffee or tea with me as she drinks her milk in the morning.
Once in a while, we have made real tea for our impromptu “tea parties.” But, now that the cold weather is here, it’s time for hot chocolate. I have been so excited to introduce my children to hot chocolate but I have wanted them to get a healthier version of what I grew up with.
I wanted just a couple of differences for my children’s hot chocolate experience:
1. No refined sugar. Refined sugar has no nutritional value and studies have proven that it does damage to our immunity, is hard for our bodies to digest, among a host of other things I’d rather not have to think about as my babies enjoy such a sweet drink.
2. Keep it simple. I didn’t want to look on the back of a box and find ingredients that I can’t pronounce. That said, I knew I wanted to make our own.
3. Delicious. Healthy and healthier don’t have to taste bad. I wanted to make sure that yummy and healthy were married in this case!
So, here’s the recipe I used.
3 tablespoons unsweetened c0coa powder
2 tablespoons raw honey
2 teaspoons gluten-free organic vanilla extract
3 cups raw whole milk
2. In a small bowl, combine cocoa powder, honey and vanilla. Stir until it makes a paste
3. Add cacao mixture to the warm milk, stir until cocoa mixture has completely dissolved.
4. Serve immediately.
And, like magic, my daughter’s first cup of hot chocolate was delightful for both of us. I think she was surprised that I was excited to let her drink something so yummy! It’s wonderful to be able to make things that are great for the whole family. The treat was all mine!
