Two Random Ways to Save Money

Posted on April 2nd, 2012 by Discount Debbie

My husband was so cute this weekend, twice is told me I should tell our readers a way we saved money. I apologize for the randomness of these two things, but they are great and my husband thinks everyone should know these tips.

1. Save money on your kids meals.

I admit that my kids have fast food once a week. We have a scheduled appointment every week during lunch and it’s our little treat. But honestly, it gets spendy. We only go to Wendy’s and I always get my children chicken nuggets, apple slices and milk. For two children to eat, it costs around $8. However, I found a way to cut that in half. Instead of ordering kids meals with mediocre prizes, I started ordering off the value menu where I get the chicken nuggets for $2.58  for two orders and the apple slices are $2 for two as well. My children don’t object to water so we just ordered two cups and that’s free making our grand total $4.58! My kids don’t miss the toys and I am saving money on our weekly indulgence. Most fast food places have a value meal so you can do this anywhere!

2. Upcycle your hamburger or hotdog buns.

Have you ever seen Father of the Bride 2 and the dad has a nervous breakdown in the store when he can’t buy the amount of buns he’s going to use, but instead he has to buy the standard eight? I am with the man, I hate that! We are a family of four and at most we eat six of eight buns. There are always two buns leftover and I hate wasting money by throwing them away. So now, I upcycle my buns. We like garlic bread around here so now with leftover buns, I butter them, throw some garlic salt on them and toast them in the oven. It’s wonderful and there is no waste! Bread is bread no matter what it looks like 🙂

Do you have any random tips to share with us? How are you saving money?

I love the Father of The Bride movies and remember that part with the hot dog buns. My store sells both the pack of 8 and the pack of 12 buns but the 12 pack NEVER seems to be in stock. I hate it! Great idea for garlic bread. Gonna do that next time:)

Great ideas. Love reading these great tips.

  3. lisa lo April 2, 2012

We have been known to do that too with buns. They are good!

  4. Lorna England April 2, 2012

Excellent idea! I have finally given up my iced tea addiction in restaurants and only order water! It’s a major savings with 2 or 3 family members!

  5. Melissa Lawler April 2, 2012

    Love the hamburger bun idea!

  6. deb kovac April 2, 2012

Thanks for the tips. I’m going to try some of them.I really enjoy your page.

I am totally with you on the fast food/kids meals! It can cost almost $20 by the time I get something, DH gets something and each kid gets a happy meal (at McDonalds). And then they don’t eat much… DH usually will get a meal and then I’ll have the kids share something and I’ll get a mini meal or something off of the value menu. The 2 cheeseburger meal is good because they each get half of a cheeseburger, I’ll get the other cheeseburger and we share the fries and they get water.

I will use the hamburger/hotdog buns for sandwiches and garlic bread too, even as “breadcrumbs” for filler in meatloaf or hamburgers.

Great ideas and love the first one!

  10. Belinda McNabb April 2, 2012

Thanks for the tips. What a great idea and I will put this to use for sure

  11. Christina April 2, 2012

Great tips! We do the same thing with hamburger/hot dog buns!

  12. Susan Hartman April 3, 2012

I seldom throw them out. I use the hamburger/hotdog rolls as garlic toast or sticks.. Any other leftover bread become breadcrumbs

  13. Maryjade Anne Manzanero April 3, 2012

    Thanks for the tip!

  14. Tammy S April 3, 2012

I love these tips. It amazes how much it cost to feed a family of 4 at a fast food chain. I always get water instead of soda, they make a ton of money off the soda.

  15. Monica April 8, 2012

I do the same thing with my son at the end of the week as a reward for being good at school! I’m going to have to try out your first tip because with my family of three even one trip costs upward of $20!! One thing I do to save money is instead of hubby and I going out for drinks or dinner with friends, we invite them over and have everyone bring something. Since we have Blockbuster @Home through my employer, DISH, oftentimes we’ll have a movie night. It removes the temptation of going out and we hardly spend a thing! I love garlic bread so I’ll be trying your upcycle idea tonight.
