To Haggle or Not to Haggle…

Posted on February 20th, 2012 by Discount Debbie

I remember being around 8-years-old and when visiting my grandma in Phoenix we went to Mexico where I experienced my first haggling. My mom wasn’t going to pay full price for anything. I learned a valuable lesson that day, one I took on my honeymoon to Mexico. 🙂

But what about normal life? What can I haggle on a day to day basis or even more often? Here’s a list of ways you can save money just by asking. This is also a list of things you may have never thought to haggle over. We all know to haggle over the price of a car, but what about other things?

1. Credit card APRs.

This is a super easy one especially if you pay on time. Call your credit card companies and most of the time you are going to need to talk to a supervisor. It may be hard to get one, but if you insist you can get one. This will probably be the only person that can actually change it for you. You’ll then need to plead your case. Remind them how you always pay on time and even how long you’ve been a customer. I did this once when getting out of credit card debt with success. However at first, they didn’t want to do it. I decided at that point to close my account and pay it off from there, they quickly changed their minds and lowered my APR. But only use this tactic if you really are going to close your account.

2. Defective clothing.

Have you ever been to a department store and tried on the perfect outfit just to see there is a slight flaw? If it’s still wearable, DON’T PUT IT BACK, ask someone for a discount. This is especially a good idea if you are able to fix it.

3. Medical bills.

There are a lot of places especially hospitals are ready for this. Many of them will already offer a 10% discount if you pay your bill in the first 30 days. If you don’t see an option like that, it never hurts to ask.

4. Appliances.

There is wiggle room on appliances. Always ask for at least 10% off especially if you are paying cash. Another option is to ask if there is a discount if you buy the floor model.

5. NFL Sunday Ticket or other sporting events on your satellite dish.

This was the best thing I ever did for my husband. I called our salletite provider, asked for NFL Sunday Ticket and mentioned how long we had been with them and what package I had and they gave it to us for free! It was totally worth the call!

6. Jewelry.

This really only applies to fine jewelry and my grandma is the queen of this! She can get anyone to knock off some money. How does she do it? She simply asks and expects them to do it. She doesn’t take no for an answer and is willing to walk away from the deal.

7. Airline vouchers.

Have you ever been asked to give up a seat or been given a voucher for a bad travel experience. Ask for more next time. When they offer you one amount reply back with an increase. The worst they can say is no.

What do you haggle over?

WOW! Great post! I don’t know WHY I have never thought of these (especially the one about defective clothing)!
