A couple of days ago our three-year-old woke up with some sort of stomach bug. He’s still putting all kinds of things in his mouth. So, it could have been food, dirt or anything else that he seemed curious about at any given moment. In any case, we thought about getting ginger ale for him and then decided to just buy some ginger and make some instead!
I’ve never made ginger ale. But, there was no shortage of recipes for me to choose from or use as a base for my own. I used a recipe as a base, Here is what I ended up doing.
2-3 Tbsp. fresh grated ginger
1/2-3/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice
1/4 cup maple syrup, honey or sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
3 cups water
6 cups carbonated water
It was so easy. I knew I needed about 1-2 inches of ginger. I didn’t measure. I just guesstimated and thought I’d err on the side of having more rather than less.
So, I grated the ginger.
Then, I put it into the pot with the 3 cups of water and salt. Bring to a boil. I also added the lemon juice but read afterwards to wait until you’ve removed the mixture from the heat to add the lemon juice. I also waited until I removed the pot from the heat to add the honey. If you are using sugar, then you need to add it while the mixture is boiling and make sure it is dissolved before removing from heat.
Let it cool and then add the carbonated water. Chill in the refrigerator or drink at room temperature.
I forgot to take a picture of the nice clean pitcher full of our homemade ginger ale. But, I do have evidence that the whole family liked it! Here’s our greasy, almost empty pitcher of the good stuff because we ALL thoroughly enjoyed it!
