So I was reading on one of my favorite deal finding / couponing forums and people were chatting about emergency kits. I am a firm believer in preparing for emergencies having lived my life in areas that get hurricanes, tornadoes, and ice storms, all of which easily knock out power anywhere from a day to 2 weeks.
I thought I’d share my most favorite and affordable emergency preparedness item with you.
I get no commission on this recommendation any which way. But should you want to purchase the Wavelength Emergency Radio, Cell Phone Charger, and Flashlight it’s only $16.95 at BePrepared.com + $6 shipping (FYI, buying a few of these will help justify the shipping cost, plus these make great, practical Christmas presents.)
I made it through Hurricane Irene last year using this as my radio. I only had to crank it every 15-30 minutes, for about a minute, to keep the radio playing. Personally I like to know what is going on during a storm so it was nice to keep up with the news via radio when the electricity was out.
The flashlight part works well too! Honestly, I haven’t tried the cell phone charger because last year I didn’t have a car charger for my phone and this requires the use of a car charger, not a wall charger, but I have since bought one so I’ll be ready next time.
Thrifty Feature No batteries! Since it’s all crank powered no need to use up expensive alkaline batteries. You can keep it on hand or in your emergency kit and not even worry about it because it’s always ready to go with just a minute or so of cranking to get started.
