Giveaway! Jane By Design Season 1 on DVD + ThriftyDivas Interview Erica Dasher “Jane”

Posted on March 12th, 2012 by Freebie Felicia

You know we love the show Jane by Design! We participated in the Jane By Design Style Challenge and have excitedly watched the show all season long. Now we get to give one lucky Thrifty Divas reader a copy of the Jane By Design Season 1 DVD. Plus everyone gets to enjoy our short little interview with Erica Dasher who plays “Jane.”

Thrifty Divas – What is your advice to fans that are wanting to fashionable but are on a budget?

Erica Dasher – I love vintage shopping. I actually don’t spend a lot of money on clothes at all. I live right around the corner from a little vintage shop and I do a lot of rummaging around, those kinds of places. I think the quality of the craftsmanship in vintage clothes is hard to come by unless you’re able to buy higher-end labels nowadays, and I think you can find a lot of higher end labels that are more affordable in a vintage shop.

But in college too we would go to Goodwill to get costumes for theme parties or whatever. I think if forces you to be more creative. If a dress doesn’t quite fit you find a belt that works. But I love vintage and resale stuff.

Thrifty Divas – I read that you’re from Houston, Texas. Do you miss it terribly?

Erica Dasher – I miss my family, but I do not miss the humidity. I’ve really grown to love L.A., but I do miss my family a lot. I’m able to visit them a lot, and they come out here too. I have an 11-year-old sister so it’s really important for us to see each other as often as possible. They just figured out how to do Skype so it’s been very exciting. We Skype like every day.

Jane By Design Season 1 on DVD will be available for sale on March 20th. You can pre-order your copy on Amazon.com.

Matt Atkinson of Jane By Design Talks to Thrifty Divas!

Posted on March 5th, 2012 by Discount Debbie

Do you remember the Jane By Design Style Challenge? Our prize for participating was the opportunity to ask Matthew Atkinson (who plays Nick Fadden, Jane’s love interest) any question we wanted. We asked, “Most actors are not overnight successes. Before landing your steady role on Jane By Design, did you work any odd jobs? Did you find ways to stretch your money to get by?” He gave us his answer in this video!

We’ll admit, he’s awfully cute! 😉 Thanks Matt Atkinson, Jane By Design, and ABC Family!

Be sure to watch the spring season finale Tuesday March 6th on ABC Family.

If you miss it, catch it online for FREE at ABCFamily.com.

Jane By Design – Interview with Andie MacDowell

Posted on January 12th, 2012 by Discount Debbie

We are still awaiting the result of the Jane By Design Style Challenge. In the meantime, we’ve been enjoying the show Jane By Design on ABC Family! If you haven’t seen it yet, you can catch up on the episodes online for FREE at ABCFamily.com.

We also got the chance to chat with one of the stars of the show, Andie MacDowell! She plays the demanding and difficult boss, Gray Chandler Murray.

Thrifty Divas: What is a typical day like on the set of “Jane by Design?”

Andie MacDowell: Fast. It’s very fast. We work really hard. The writers and the producers don’t have a life. They were there all the time. The kids are just great. They’re gifted and talented and smart and funny and they gave me such amazing energy. Watching Erica work was really—I can’t tell you how good she is. The kid’s great. And they all know how lucky they are. You can just see it. Rowly was really wonderful and even helpful to me. They were just sweet.

We’d hang out in tiny little trailers. Eat—they have nice food but we don’t have very long to eat. We’re changing hair really fast. We’re getting dressed really fast and we’re running back into the set. Working late at night sometimes, which is really hard when you’re my age. Having to remember your lines at midnight. But it was all fun. It was a lot of fun.

Thrifty Divas: Who or what inspires your personal fashion style?

Andie MacDowell: My personal fashion style—I think it’s my nature probably more than anything. I just go with things that I like my personal self. The things that make me feel warm and comfortable. I’m really into boots. I like jeans. I don’t know, I’m kind of a country girl, but yet I can also enjoy dressing up because I think I was exposed to certain things in the fashion world.

I come from a small town and I grew up very simply so I think there’s a piece of me that will always be that. But I’ve been exposed to high fashion so there’s also going to be that piece as well.

You can see Andie MacDowell on Jane By Design on ABC Family Tuesdays at 9/8 central or on watch full episodes on ABCFamily.com for free.

Buy the Look for Less! Jane by Design Style on a Budget

Jane By Design Style Challenge #7 – The Final Challenge!

This is your last chance to help Thrifty Divas win a mention on the show!!! Please be sure to go to Jane by Design’s Facebook page and write on their wall “Thrifty Divas sent me here!” That will count as your vote for us. 😀

Did you see the premiere of Jane by Design last night? If you missed it, you can watch it online for free at ABCFamily.com.

Speaking of the premiere, the Jane by Design Style Challenge #7 was to watch the premiere of the show, take careful notice of the fashion, pick a particular outfit from the show, and create a “How You Too Can Get the Look” blog post.

My inspiration: Andie MacDowell

Andie MacDowell plays Gray Chandler Murray, better known as Jane’s boss.

In the premiere episode, Gray interviewed Jane to fill the job as her assistant. While she scrutinized Jane’s look, I was too busy keeping my eye on Gray.

The first thing you notice is of course, the gold and turquoise statement necklace.

I found this similar necklace on eBay, my favorite source for unique and affordable accessories. This necklace is listed “Buy It Now” at $19.99 with free shipping.

Next up, the little black dress. Keeping in the rigors of fashion I shopped name brand (though no doubt you can find an even cheaper knock-off 😉 ) yet miraculously found an affordable Calvin Klein!

This Calvin Klein dress is on clearance at BonTon.com for only $35.20. Alternatively, I found an Anne Klein Dress with all sizes in stock for $89.

In the interview scene, Gray puts on a blue printed shawl wrap.

While I did find a shawl that exemplifies Gray’s style, it’s $74.95 on ShoeBuy.com. That’s a splurge for a Thrifty Diva.

Personally, I’d go with this more bold, yet less expensive, shawl on Amazon.com for $15.99 + $4.99 shipping.

Still the international flair of Gray’s style, but at a reasonable price.

There you have it, get the look for less! Now that’s how a Thrifty Diva does style. 😉

Please vote for us! Go to Jane by Design’s Facebook page and write on their wall “Thrifty Divas sent me here!”

And a big THANK YOU to everyone voting for us.

Budget Style Inspired by Budget Items

Jane By Design Style Challenge #6

If you like what you see, please vote for us! Go to Jane by Design’s Facebook page and write on the wall “Thrifty Divas sent me here!” We are competing against 30 other bloggers trying to win a mention on the new ABC Family show “Jane by Design,” but we can’t win without your help. Thank you! <3

When most people think of fashion they think “expensive.” While some fashion is indeed expensive, you’d be surprised that even high-end fashion can be inspired by budget friendly items. As we were told for this challenge, “Rumor has it that one of the most coveted designer bags of all time was inspired by a roll of tape.” And then we were asked to get inspired by pretzels.

First, I decided to get crafty and make something fun out of the pretzels.

I made a pretzel butterfly!

Though it needed some sparkle…

…and then some color too.

With my funky little pretzel butterfly brooch completed, I took another look to the pretzel for inspiration.

I created a pretzel inspired beaded necklace!

Now that’s my budget “twist” on pretzel fashion. 😉

Thanks Style Savings Sarah for your creative talent!

Outfit Style from Day to Night the Thrifty Divas’ Way: Accessorize!

Jane By Design Style Challenge #5

If you like what you see, please vote for us! Go to Jane by Design’s Facebook page and write on the wall “Thrifty Divas sent me here!”

Challenge #5 was to take a plain white dress shirt and style it for an office day look then dress it up as cocktail party evening attire.

Day                                                                                  Night

Best of all, I assure you this is a thrifty solution!

Both scarves are from Kohl’s purchased on clearance. One was $3 and the other was $6.

All jewelry (necklace and 2 brooches) were purchased on eBay.com for uber cheap, each piece cost lost than $4 including shipping.

The sweater is from a local discount store similar to TJMaxx or Ross. It cost around $5.

Thrifty Style Tip

Invest in quality basics (such as a white dress shirt and simple black skirt) that fit exceptionally well, then use affordable and fun accessories to make it seem like you have many more outfits.

Thanks Style Savings Sarah!

DIY: Ugly Holiday Sweater Transformed to Cute Christmas Scarf!

Posted on December 23rd, 2011 by Discount Debbie

Jane By Design Style Challenge #4

Please vote for us! Go to Jane by Design’s Facebook page and write on the wall “Thrifty Divas sent me here!”

Before…                                                                 After

A Thrifty Diva isn’t afraid of an upcycle challenge. Turning something you already have into something new is a frugal solution.

For the Jane By Design Style Challenge we were sent an ugly holiday sweater.

The challenge was to take this sweater and turn it into something fashionable.

First I thoroughly inspected the sweater looking for a redeeming quality. I found it in an unlikely place.

Okay, still ugly… but what about the back side?

Voila! Subtle, silver brilliance for a classy touch of Christmas.

With my inspiration source designated, I began cutting and sewing.

Let me tell you, this challenge was indeed a challenge! Knit fibers fray and everything had to be handsewn. I’ll admit, it took hours to complete this project.

This is my creative and stylish solution for those difficult edges, sewing in silver ribbon. I had to make a needle out of wire, but it worked. Also, one spool of silver ribbon was actually wired floral ribbon (it’s what I had on hand, plus it was on clearance after Christmas last year) so I had to carefully remove the wire before being able to sew it. Once again, this project was deceptively challenging.

But I would say the results were worth it…

Cute Christmas Scarf!

Thanks Style Savings Sarah for your creative work!

A Thrifty Diva’s Purse Personality

Posted on December 21st, 2011 by Discount Debbie

Jane By Design Style Challenge #3

They say you can tell a lot about a person by their bag. On the new ABCFamily show Jane by Design, the character Gray Chandler Murray says, “The bag you carry says who you are and who you want to be.” I prefer to look at it another way. I say, “The bag you carry says where you’ve been and where you are going!”

The bag that best represents my personality was purchased at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum gift shop in Washington, D.C.

To me this bag says:

“I love to travel.”

“I have an international flair for style.”

“I’m practical with the long strap and modest bag size.”

“I enjoy luxury. Who doesn’t love the look and feel of satin?”

But this bag has a secret. It was thrifty too! Shhh… less than $15 was a steal of a bargain! Though, you wouldn’t know that looking at it. In fact, the closest current item I could find on SmithsonianStore.com has an original price of $75. Sometimes in-person shopping leads to the best deals. Plus, I get to have the fun memory of visiting Washington, D.C. and retell the story every time someone asks me where I bought this bag.

Now are you itching to share your adorable purse with the world? Go HERE and post a picture of your favorite purse! Be sure to mention Thrifty Divas sent you. 😉

Thanks Style Savings Sarah!
