Save Money At Starbucks

I usually make coffee at home. My husband and I LOVE our Trader Joe’s Organic Wake Up Blend Coffee. It happens to be the best price for organic coffee that we have found (with the exception of Whole Foods Organic Pacific Blend), and it is the very best tasting coffee we’ve had. So, that works for us. On rare occasion, I do make a stop at a coffee shop. When I do, it is usually Starbucks. It’s always a reminder of how expensive coffee can be. Did you know, however, that you can save money even when you do make your occasional Starbucks stop?

Here are a few ways to save money at Starbucks.

1. Order chai tea instead of a chai tea latte. Then, when you get your drink, add your own milk in the condiment section. Then, you’ve just saved $1.20 by just “making” your own chai tea latte!

2. Get the app. Did you know that Starbucks has an app? If you download the Starbucks app, you can get a free drink every time you buy twelve.

3. Ask for a larger cup. If you usually order a tall, ask for a tall drink in a grande cup… or a grande drink in a venti cup. Then, head over to that condiment bar and fix up your drink. My husband does that because he wants to make sure that there’s enough room for the amount of milk he prefers. You can save $1.20 by doing this.

4. Ask for “light ice” in your cold drinks. Have you ever seen how much ice goes into an iced vanilla latte? The entire cup is full of ice! Requesting “light ice” in your drink is like doubling the size of your drink. Get more drink for your dollar!

How do you save money when you go out for coffee?

Homemade Gingerbread Latte

Posted on October 9th, 2013 by Discount Debbie

Many years ago, a friend told me that I just HAD to try out Starbucks' Gingerbread Latte. I wasn't much into any of the holiday drinks at Starbucks at the time. I had my usual drink that I ordered every time. Every. Single. Time. Yes, I like routine 😉 Anyway, she and I went out for coffee and she insisted I try the holiday drink. So, I did. I realized, almost immediately, why she had insisted I try this Gingerbread Latte. I was hooked.

I don't always get coffee from Starbucks because I am happy with the coffee we make in our percolator. We get a great deal on organic coffee that my husband and I love. However, I have made a couple of trips to Starbucks in the last month or so. I've had (and enjoyed) the Pumpkin Spice Latte. But, I miss their Gingerbread Latte. Maybe it will show up closer to Christmas. I'm assuming it will.

In any case, it's in my head and I have thought so much about making my own version. A cheaper, healthier version. I found a recipe that I, of course (because it's what I do), modified. I didn't have molasses. I decided to make this after having already set our coffee maker to just make regular coffee (which tends to be strong anyway). However, if I'd planned it beforehand, I would have just made a little bit of extra strong coffee. Next time! And, because I didn't use strong coffee, I only used 1/4-1/2 cup of milk.

Here's the recipe:

  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup  coffee
  • 1/4-1/2 cup milk of your choice
  • sweetener to taste

1. Stir all ingredients into a pot and heat.

2. If you want your milk to be foamy, like it is at Starbucks, then heat that separately and add to the rest of the mixture.

3. Enjoy the moment. 🙂
