Eating Out Without Breaking the Bank

Posted on June 30th, 2017 by Uncategorized

Family eating a meal at a outdoor restaurant together

I’ve always loved eating out, but I found that I was spending way too much on each trip and thought I would have to give up restaurants completely. I was totally wrong, though! Eating out doesn’t have to be banned completely when you’re on a budget – especially if you follow these tips…

Share meals

Instead of ordering an entire kids meal that your kiddo likely won’t eat more than 3 bites of, just get a few dishes that the whole family can share! Just be aware that some restaurants may charge an extra fee for sharing plates.

Opt for water

Ordering soft drinks (or coffee or juice or tea) for everyone in the family is going to add up quickly – you could buy a whole liter of soda for around the price of one glass at a restaurant. Instead, have everyone opt for a water! Not only is it healthier, but your wallet will thank you.

Find promotions and discounts

Groupon always has lots of great discounts for restaurants, and it often forces you to try out somewhere new! Also, lots of places offer days where kids eat free, and sign up for emails to score birthday discounts (lots of places offer up a free entree for the birthday boy or girl), free appetizers and more!

Take leftovers home

Never be shy about asking for a to-go container to take home the rest of the bread or the last few bites of pasta. You’ve paid for all of it, so don’t just leave it behind!

Say “no” to appetizers

You’ll likely get plenty of food with your entree, so unless you have a coupon for a free appetizer, or it’s your favorite part about that restaurant, steer clear. Ask for extra bread or a basket of fries to munch on instead.

Thrifty Tip: Kids Eat Free Restaurants

Posted on February 6th, 2014 by Discount Debbie

One of the main reasons we don’t go out to eat very much is that it can be very expensive. Things add up quickly, even with the little ones ordering from the Little People menu. It ends up feeling more expensive if they don’t eat what they ordered from their Little People menu. Yes, that happens. So, it just ends up being easier, less expensive and healthier to eat at home. However, that also means that it’s more work for…yours truly. So, the list below is one that I will be sure to pin onto a board over on Pinterest because I want to have this reference around at all times…especially on the weekends! I’m sure you will, too. Where your children can eat free. (Of course, be sure to check with your local restaurant to make sure that it’s not just a regional offer.)

How to “Complain”

Posted on May 6th, 2013 by Discount Debbie

You’ve heard the squeaky wheel gets the oil right? Well I’m convinced that the squeaky Thrifty Divas get discounts. Whether you are shopping at your favorite store or eating at your favorite restaurant, if you have a bad experience telling the right people can definitely help you save some money.

Disclaimer: This advice is mean’t for when you have a bad experience and need to know how to talk to the right people, it’s not an excuse to try and get free/discounted stuff just because. Please use this advice the right way.

First of all there is definitely and right and wrong way to complain. It’s so important that you do it the right way to get the results you want.

Here’s how we think you should “complain”.

1. Don’t yell. NEVER EVER EVER yell. It’s not only rude, but it will never get you anywhere. Ever heard that you get more flies with honey than vinegar? I can’t stress how true this is. Kill them with kindness and you’ll totally disarm any situation.

2. Speak to the decision maker. This may be a manager, supervisor or some other kind of person in charge, but it’s important you talk to who can make things happen. Complaining to the wrong person not only won’t get you anywhere, it could make things worse.

3. Explain what happened in detail. If it’s something that’s more drawn out and complicated, type it up for the right person to see. There is so much importance in details. The more detailed you can be, the more serious your complaint will be taken.

4. Tell them what you would like. A lot of places/people will flat out ask you how you’d like the situation to be resolved. Don’t just say you don’t know, tell them what you’d like done to resolve it. Be reasonable and don’t take advantage, but let your requests be known.

5. Let it be. If you get the issue resolved, let it go there. Don’t complain behind their back, instead praise their customer service for helping you get the issue resolved.

Remember that behind every complaint is a person 🙂
