Planning A Vegetable Garden

Posted on March 30th, 2012 by Discount Debbie

Gardens are an awesome way to save money and is there anything better than fresh veggies? I think not! Right now is the time to start planning your garden, for some of you, it’s even time to plant. In a few shorts months, you’ll be enjoying the fruits of your labor or the veggies of your labor. 🙂

Here are some things to think about when planning your garden.

1. When to plant. The United States has so many different climates this time of year. Where we live, we just got snow but my parents are enjoying temperatures in the 80’s. You must plant for your climate. What works where we live won’t work in other places. Garden Gate is an awesome tool that helps you figure all those time tables out.

2. What to plant. This is HUGE. There are so many types of vegetables and it’s hard to decide what to plant and what not to plant. You may be tempted to plant vegetables you don’t even like. Think about what you and your family enjoy. Take into consideration how easy or hard certain items are to grow. If this is your first time planting a garden, keep it simple with only a few vegetables. You can add more once you get the hang out of it. I was overly ambitious my first year and ended up with one little tomato.

3. Why to plant. My grandpa always said, “If you don’t have a good reason to do something, you won’t do it long.” This couldn’t be more true! If you have a good why to plant and maintain a garden, you’ll want to keep it up and take care of it. Growing your own food is a great way to know exactly what you are putting into your families body. You’ll be able to decided what and if pesticides will use and can even go totally organic. Gardening is also a lot of fun. If you’ve never planted a seed and watch it go from that straight onto your children’s dinner plate, this may sound foreign. It really is a lot of fun to see that. Gardening will also save on your produce bill.
