Thrifty Tip: How To Keep Your Flowers Fresh

I love having fresh flowers in our home. But, I hate to buy flowers only to have them wilt within days of buying them. Did you know that there are easy ways to keep those flowers fresh? Here are a few tips:

1. Are you buying them fresh? Check the point where the stem of the flower meets the petals. If it is soft, the flowers are not fresh. If it is firm, however, then you’ve got yourself some fresh flowers.

2. Keep them in water. After buying flowers from the store, I usually set them in a vase full of water as soon as I get home. That way, they can stay fresh as I attend to getting the eggs and cheese into the refrigerator.

3. Use a clean vase. Protect your flowers from bacteria by washing your vase with hot soapy water before placing the flowers in there.

4. Cutting is critical. When you’re ready to arrange your flowers, be sure to cut the stems at a 45 degree angle (so as to allow for good water absorption). Even though it’s easier to use scissors, using a sharp knife is recommended. Scissors can squish the stems, thereby hindering absorption.

5. Remove other greenery. Remove any of the leaves on the stems in order to keep the water clean and clear.

6. Change the water. Change the water every other day to reduce the risk of bacteria growth, which equals slimy, dirty water.

7. Pick out dying buds. If you see some of the buds dying, be sure to pull them out to keep the other buds fresh.

8. Use household items to keep them fresh.

  • Apple cider vinegar. Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 2 tablespoons of sugar into lukewarm water.
  • Aspirin. Crush 2 aspirin tablets and put them into a vase to keep the bacteria out of the water.
  • Sugar. Blend 2 tablespoons of sugar with 3 tablespoons of white vinegar into a quart of warm water. Add that to the water in the vase to revitalize those flowers.
