When it comes to homeschooling it’s more cost effective than it has ever been before. Free lesson plans can be found online as well as supplements for learning. There are a few items that help make teaching our children fun and save us money.
They are bright and colorful. They are magnets. They scream to children, “Please come play with us!” Aside from that, they save money on paper when working on letter recognition or spelling. They can also be used to teach numbers and colors depending on the set you get.
Yes, you want to teach the fine motor skills that come with writing, but kids can trace these with their fingers and have fun with them in their off school hours. You don’t even need a magnet board for them. Just use the side of the fridge.
It is difficult to lose assignments when they are in a bound book. Plus, kids enjoy personalizing them. Composition books come in a wide variety of colors and styles nowadays. They come both in college and wide ruled. There is a place to write the subject on the front of most of them. Bound notebooks also promote paper conservation. Kids feel less inclined to pull a sheet out for doodling because it’s bound similar to a real book. Best of all notebooks are inexpensive. I have found them at dollar stores, but the best time of year to stock up is during back-to-school sale season in August when they’re even cheaper.
Dry Erase Boards
I have found this item to be better than a chalk board. First, rather than using chalk, it uses markers. There isn’t that high pitched squeak when I write on it. A lack of chalk also reduces items in my home my toddler can stick in his mouth and choke on. Second, they save money in the paper department. They are reusable and can be used for daily school activities such as writing spelling words or doing math problems. Get a big one for teaching and/or a smaller one for each of your children.
You have looked into grants and scholarships. You have worked and saved up your own money. Now you are considering taking out a student loan. Education is important, but it is also insanely expensive. Many of us find that we will be working until retirement just to pay off our student loans. That’s if we have other things we want in life, like a family or a house. We need to get all the facts and weigh the good against the bad, even with a topic as important as education
Society Is Changing
There are a number of changes that have been happening in the way we work in the United States. First of all, most people don’t stay with the same job for twenty years. They don’t earn retirement benefits. Benefits in the work sector have also changed. Many employers are only hiring part time in order to avoid the costs of mandatory health care.
We need to look at the positions that our education would qualify us for and determine if our education will support our lifestyle. Will we be able to raise a family on that amount of income? Will we be able to pay back student loans, plan for retirement, and pay for our medical insurance?
There are vocational schools that allow you to get an education for a profession but not need to take classes that are useless to that profession. There are a wide range of schools like this. They still cost money, but they cost a whole lot less. Plus, they tend to lead to employment more quickly and many of these professions pay very well.
What Other Options Are Available
While we know there is student loan forgiveness, we also know we shouldn’t plan on it. That means that a second job is the best bet for paying for your education. Other options are asking family for help with a written agreement to pay them back. Or you could promise you career services free to them in exchange for helping you out. Think outside the box, or should I say, think outside of the standard student loan.

It’s a pretty simple program. You need to first find out if your school or another local one is participating. Then you just clip those box tops and everyone you clip is worth $.10 that will go toward your school’s educational needs.
If your school does participate, they will have a coordinator that you will give the box tops to and they will take it from there.
