Easter is almost here! Those cute little egg dying kits are out now too and at around $5 a package, it can get expensive if you need to dye a lot of eggs. But we have a Thrifty Diva alternative and it really works! All you need is Kool-Aid packets. You can use the off-brand too and save even more money. At 10 cents a piece usually, you really have the potential to dye eggs for very cheap using this method.

What You Need
Bowls or cups filled with just enough water to cover an egg
Hardboiled eggs
Assorted colors of Kool-Aid Mix
What To Do
1. Fill your cups/bowels with water. Just enough to cover your eggs.
2. Put in one mix per cup. I did cherry, grape, orange, lemonade, lemon lime and pink lemonade. Mix in your water well.
3. Slowly place the eggs in the cups and let sit for up to 3 minutes depending on the intensity you want.
4. Take out and dry. An egg carton is great for letting your eggs dry.
5. Hide them!

Easter has to be one of my favorite holidays for leftovers. We had an amazing ham yesterday with a ton of family and there were two huge ham bones leftover that I asked to take. There’s a great thrifty tip, don’t ever be ashamed to ask for leftovers! I will be able to use these two ham bones to make enough split pea soup for several meals as well as some for the freezer for later.
Do you have a ham bone from your Easter ham? Here’s the recipe I use. You can use this for the stove top too, but I love to throw everything into a crock pot and let it simmer all day.
What you need:
- 1 (16 oz.) pkg. dried green split peas, rinsed
- 1 meaty ham bone
- 3 carrots, peeled and sliced
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 2 ribs of celery plus leaves, chopped
- 1 or 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 bay leaf
- 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes
- 1 tbsp. seasoned salt
- 1/2 tsp. fresh pepper
- 1 1/2 qts. hot water
What to do:
Layer ingredients in slow cooker in the order given; pour in water. Do not stir ingredients. Cover and cook on HIGH 4 to 5 hours or on low 8 to 10 hours until peas are very soft and ham falls off bone. Remove bones and bay leaf.
Enjoy!

April is already upon us! Am I the only one who feels like the year is flying by?! Hang on to your Easter hats as we fly through another month. I have to say that I’m excited about the sales cycle this month. Of course, we expect to see Easter-related items on sale. However, Earth Day also falls in the month of April. And, while I don’t really “celebrate” Earth day, I LOVE getting organic items on sale! Wouldn’t it be fun to celebrate Earth Day by eating a highly discounted organic steak?
Here are some of the things to look for this month.
Easter-Related Food: Look for ham and prime rib to be discounted right before and right after Easter. Keep in mind that stores carry a greater supply before holidays and generally treat what has not been sold in a clearance manner after the holiday. So, get your Easter ham or prime rib on sale and then look for them to be deeply discounted the day after Easter!
Easter-Basket Items: We’ve already seen some Easter candy coupon deals. However, look for all the candy, plastic eggs, food coloring and baskets to be placed on clearance the day after Easter. Honestly, that’s the day the my children will get their baskets: Monday after Easter
Eco-friendly Products: Look for both sales and coupons for energy saving products.
Organic Food: Again, in honor of Earth Day, expect sales and coupons for organic foods. Yay!
Garden Items: In honor of Spring’s arrival, stores will discount gardening supplies and yard care products.
I think that the sales cycle every month offers great savings opportunities. But, I’m a bit partial to this month’s sales. I hope you enjoy them as much as I will!
Those little kits for dyeing Easter eggs are all over the place. I have seen them for as little as $1.50 and as expensive as $15 for some really fancy dyeing. But you really don’t need to buy these kits if you have food coloring and even some crayons.

1. Hard boil your eggs as usual.
2. Let cool or decorate with crayons. If you want to use crayons to decorate, you’ll want the eggs to be warm. That way when you go to draw on the eggs, the wax from the crayons will melt nicely. This is great for the little ones and is VERY little mess. Just make sure the eggs aren’t too hot for little ones to touch.
3. Break out the food coloring. Grab how ever many bowls you have as colors and pour water in them. Then, add some drops of food coloring to each bowl. The amount of drops really depends on the intensity of color you want. Also add some vinegar to your water, as this will help the colors be brighter! A teaspoon or two should be enough for a regular size bowl.
