Saving Money on Coffee

DCF 1.0

Ok, look, I live in the coffee capital of the United States. I like me some coffee. There are a million different places to get coffee here and unfortunately the very best one which is my very favorite in the whole wide world is only a couple of blocks from our apartment, and also comes with a slightly more premium price than your run-of-the-mill Starbucks. Drip coffee is pretty cheap at any coffee shop, but let’s face it, you’re probably not going out just for drip coffee—you want your espresso! If you buy a $4 coffee once a weekday, that’s $20 a week. If your coffee is more expensive or you buy more than one a day, you’re looking at over a $100 a month in coffee money! How can we cut back on this without becoming caffeine deprived?

The obvious answer is to make coffee at home, and yeah, I know, that sounds boring. It is thrifty though! You don’t need to spend $200 on a fancy machine, a basic one will do. And it doesn’t have to be boring! Many grocery stores now sell containers of flavored syrups that you can use to whip up your own drink at home. You can now have that pumpkin mint mocha with strawberry whipped cream that has been your dream drink for years, even though everyone else thinks it sounds horrid. Even a can of storebought whipped cream to top off your drink costs less than one cup of coffee shop coffee, and it will top a dozen or more drinks!

You don’t need to completely deprive yourself of fancy coffee, either—even if you go out for coffee twice a week, you’re only spending $8 per week instead of $20. Also, grab your travel mug on your way out the door—many coffee shops will knock off ten cents or more if you bring your reusable mug along. Be sure to sign up for any rewards or punch cards as well. If you are buying coffee there somewhat regularly, you might as well have each purchase count towards a free coffee! Coffee is amazing, and you certainly can remain caffeinated in the mornings while saving money at the same time!

Save Money At Starbucks

I usually make coffee at home. My husband and I LOVE our Trader Joe’s Organic Wake Up Blend Coffee. It happens to be the best price for organic coffee that we have found (with the exception of Whole Foods Organic Pacific Blend), and it is the very best tasting coffee we’ve had. So, that works for us. On rare occasion, I do make a stop at a coffee shop. When I do, it is usually Starbucks. It’s always a reminder of how expensive coffee can be. Did you know, however, that you can save money even when you do make your occasional Starbucks stop?

Here are a few ways to save money at Starbucks.

1. Order chai tea instead of a chai tea latte. Then, when you get your drink, add your own milk in the condiment section. Then, you’ve just saved $1.20 by just “making” your own chai tea latte!

2. Get the app. Did you know that Starbucks has an app? If you download the Starbucks app, you can get a free drink every time you buy twelve.

3. Ask for a larger cup. If you usually order a tall, ask for a tall drink in a grande cup… or a grande drink in a venti cup. Then, head over to that condiment bar and fix up your drink. My husband does that because he wants to make sure that there’s enough room for the amount of milk he prefers. You can save $1.20 by doing this.

4. Ask for “light ice” in your cold drinks. Have you ever seen how much ice goes into an iced vanilla latte? The entire cup is full of ice! Requesting “light ice” in your drink is like doubling the size of your drink. Get more drink for your dollar!

How do you save money when you go out for coffee?

Spend Less In 2014…Without Changing A Thing

Posted on January 14th, 2014 by Discount Debbie

Good news! Financial analysts are predicting that there are a few things that will drop in price this year. That means that we will be able to save money on items that we may already be buying or thinking about buying without having to do anything different. No coupons. No promo codes. Nothing. Just a drop in price. Now, let’s find out what those things are!

1. Off-Contract Smartphones

We recently wrote about ways to save money on your cell phone bill. In that post, we mentioned the popularity of no-contract cell phone plans. Well, this year the phones purchased for those no contract plans are decreasing in price by about 13%. Some think this will mean that more people would consider paying up front for a phone in order to get a cheaper monthly plan. It definitely sweetens the deal, doesn’t it?

2. Crude Oil

I have to admit that I wondered if we would actually see that drop in price at the pump. I guess I’m getting a bit cynical in my old age 😉 In any case, apparently, oil production within the US that it’s expected to reach its all-time high in the next two years. As a result, the US won’t need to rely on crude oil imports as much. Soooo, that should translate into lower gas prices. Fingers crossed!

3. Coffee

Coffee? Coffee!!! We get a lot of our coffee beans from Brazil. And, Brazil is expected to yield a massive crop of one of the most popular coffee beans by about mid year this year. That should force prices down. Remember, supply and demand in your Economics class? Yay! Who cares why the price is going down, right? We’ll take it :)

These are just a few. Click here to see the full list.
