Specialty Grocery Stores: Worth It?

Posted on August 9th, 2012 by Discount Debbie

I have a confession to make. I have a love/hate relationship with most specialty stores. I love them because of the kinds of products they carry. They aren’t always foods or products I can find at my local grocery stores. The ones I love have more organic and all-natural products. However, the prices at these stores are usually moderately to extremely high. That’s the “hate” part of the relationship.

Now, as a Thrifty Diva, I always aim to score deals WHEREVER I go, including specialty stores. So, I don’t hesitate to go; however, I’m still armed with price points and coupons. I love scoring a great deal at specialty stores.

I recently took a trip to Trader Joe’s. I have always loved shopping there. But, I haven’t been there in several years, as there’s not one where I currently live. However, I was attending a conference where a Trader Joe’s had just recently opened up. So, I took a field trip!

Here are two keys to shopping at specialty grocery stores:

1. Find out their coupon policy. You may be surprised. Often, they have their own store coupons and will take manufacturer coupons as well. Whole Foods does that. Use both on a sale item and you can get fantastic deals. I’ve scored amazing deals and even freebies at Whole Foods before.

2. Know the prices of your favorite items. I love avocados but don’t buy them much because they are expensive. When they are on sale at our local grocery store, they sell for $1.50 each. At Trader Joe’s the regular price on organic avocados was better than that! I got four organic avocados for $3.99! Guacamole tastes even better at a better price 😉

What are you favorite specialty stores?
