Save Money with Homemade Drano

Posted on February 21st, 2012 by Discount Debbie

Remember the freezer meal party we did a couple of weekends ago? A huge aggravation was that the sink kept getting clogged and it was definitely slowing progress. One of the girls there owns a cleaning business and she let us know her thrifty tricks to a lot of things. One of them were slow drains.

This method would have saved us tons of money, maybe several hundred dollars on our brand new house we bought. For some reason we had clogs ALL THE TIME and were spending over $100 a month in Drano. That stuff is expensive!

So here’s your alternative and my friend’s recipe when she encounters a clog. Instead of breaking out the drano, she finds this stuff 🙂

All you need is probably in your kitchen.
1/2 box baking soda
1/2 c. white vinegar
1 qt. boiling water
1 washcloth

Dump the baking soda down the drain, then pour in the vinegar. Then plug the drain with the washcloth.
Let sit for 30 minutes. Once your time is up, dump the boiling water down the drain and watch your clog go away.

The baking soda method is MUCH cheaper than using any of the other chemicals and our way is MUCH more natural 🙂

Have you ever used this method?

    The Plumbers wife says…….
Never ever use Drano!!! Why you ask? If it falls in your eyes while working under the sink it can damage your eyes or worse blind you.
I like this safer version they have listed up above no caustic chemicals there.
Never put these items down the kitchen sink drain (even if you have a disposal):
    Oil
    carrots
    potatos
    fats
    rice
    paint
there are so many more, I could write this all day.
Anything that can congeal or solidify.
    Some easy tip:
Dawn and hot water work great and a ZIP-it will help pull the junk up.
having a sink strainer keeps things happy. Washing the pet use a hair catcher strainer.
Otherwise going rate for a Licensed plumber (in the upper midwest) is $125-$175 an hour!
