Tax season is just around the corner. It’s a four month time that seems to go by to fast. To get the most out of my tax return I make sure that I have everything that I need. I also make sure I study the information available to me.
I make sure I have all my w2’s or 1099’s before I try to file. Student Loan paperwork can sometimes be found online. If I have worked freelance during the year, I make sure I have kept a log of my work and the income I have gained from it. I keep all my tax paperwork with my legal papers so I don’t lose them.
The IRS Website
Tax forms and directions can be found for free on www.irs.gov . Pub 17 can describe all the laws and rules that go along with filing my own tax return. If reading off a screen is difficult for me, I can have a Pub 17 sent to me. I check my available tax information so I know if the tax laws pertinent to me has changed from year to year.
Free Or Discount
Many tax offices (such as Liberty Tax or online offers) will give a discount to military, police, or fire fighters. During the slow months (late February or early March) simple tax returns are free or for a very low fee. Don’t forget to look at the coupons found on front doors or window or in the mail. They also can reduce the price of a tax return.
