We are not a family that eats out very often. There are several reasons for that. It’s hard to not think about what we could have eaten at home (both quantity and quality) for the amount we spend at a restaurant. It’s also rarely going to be as healthy as we could eat at home. And, with two little children, it’s usually more work to go out than it is to eat at home. Seriously.
In any case, last week I got a whiff of a burger that smelled great to me at the moment. And, I could not get it out of my head. No, I am not pregnant! And, even though I make burgers on occasion, I was determined to make it like the one I had smelled, with that special sauce fast food places use!
But, I also wanted to make it as healthy as possible even though I wanted a fast food replica. No, I am not pregnant. I was just on a mission. So, I looked online to find a recipe that I could use and modify to make it taste good and not be filled with a bunch of things that we’d rather not put into our bodies. I found a pretty simple one with only three ingredients: sweet pickle relish, mayonnaise and ketchup. Well, we already had organic ketchup here. So, I went to two stores looking for organic mayonnaise and organic pickle relish at a decent price. Finding organic mayonnaise was easy. But, neither store had organic relish. I settled for a non-sweet dill relish instead. (Of course, this morning as I glanced over deals at various stores, I discovered that Whole Foods has their 365 Everyday Organic Dill Relish on sale for $2.39! Don’t you hate it when that happens!)
Putting it together was easy. Here’s what I used:
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 Tbsp. dill relish
2 Tbsp (actually just a little more than 2…maybe 2 1/2) ketchup
Mix it all up and spread it on your homemade burger and enjoy a much healthier version of what you’d get any burger joint. My husband LOVED it…and so did I!
What fast food replicas have you made at home?
