Giveaway! Win a $50 Home Improvement Gift Card

Posted on September 24th, 2012 by Freebie Felicia

It’s still September, so technically it’s still hurricane season and still “Preptember.” That’s right, September is National Preparedness Month!

Do you remember Hurricane Irene from last year (2011)? It was such a crazy storm affecting the Northeast much more than most anticipated. In New York City, this uncommon event has people more aware that anything can happen. With Notify NYC to help the locals be better informed and therefore better prepared for next time.

OEM (Office of Emergency Management) is urging New York residents to sign up for Notify NYC, the City’s official emergency notification system. Subscribers receive text messages, e-mails, phone calls or Tweets about significant citywide events, as well as smaller events happening in their own neighborhoods. These notifications cover topics such as severe weather, school closures, subway disruptions, and traffic advisories in all areas of the city

Anyone can sign up and customize the alerts they would like to receive by visiting or following @NotifyNYC on Twitter.

I think the website is fairly easy to navigate but could look a little more visually appealing. I understand it is offering a helpful civic service but right now it looks like a bland template that they didn’t customize.

  29. Dreama September 25, 2012

I think this is a great way to give out information but there needs to be other ways to communicate with the public because not everyone has a phone available all the time. So maybe have some type of alarm that can make people aware of an emergency situation.

    Thanks, Dreama
