Fuel Saving Myths
I like everyone in the nation are trying to save money on gas. Whether we are doing it by driving less, buying a more fuel efficient car or trying other tricks, we are trying to accomplish the same goal–save money! When the gas prices went up several years ago we traded in our big SUV in for a small 4-cylinder car. It made a huge difference! But what about other tips people suggest that they say will help save you money at the pump. Are they true or myths? I found a great article that may change the way you think about fuel! Here are a few points that may shock you.
1. Don’t worry about your air filter! This actually doesn’t help with gas mileage! This used to be the case, but now that most cars are controlled by computers things have changed. Computers now regulate how much fuel is used and adjusts the engine accordingly for when the filter is dirty. Pretty interesting huh? My grandpa would be rolling over in his grave if he heard that!
2. Fill up whenever you want. Some people have thought it was better to fill your car up in the morning time when temperatures are cooler and gas is more dense. Actually gas is stored underground so temperature won’t fluctuate much no matter what time you fill up.
3. Turn the a/c off. According to this study, having the air conditioning going does affect fuel economy. It wasn’t much, but there was a difference. Not enough difference to make me turn it off, but it may make you open your windows.
4. Don’t worry about who you buy gas from. If you have to choose between a no-name gas station and a well known one, go for what’s cheaper. Although the no-name may leave out the additives that other stations use to help your engine run better, but you’ll be fine without it.
