My life went from one to four in a matter of five years. I didn’t get married until I was 27 and started having kids a year after that so all my ideas about saving money went out the door when I added a husband and two kids to the mix. I was used to cooking for one, going out to eat for one, shopping for one and well you get the picture. I had to learn quick to budget for a family of four. Here are some things I confess to doing to save money as a mom. Some I may have only done once, but I still did them to save money.
1. I fed my kids Costco samples for lunch. Don’t judge me 🙂 Our local Costco has super sample Saturdays and let me tell you it’s enough food to feed an adult let alone a child. And it’s usually very balanced. They always have proteins, veggies and even fruit. And best of all it was free. I can’t believe I just admitted to doing this, but we did and it was awesome. It was only once, should we do it again?
2. I rarely buy new clothes for my kids. I don’t feel bad about this one at all. If you are going to buy used clothing, kids clothes are the way to go. They are generally very well taken care of because kids don’t wear them for long. You pay way less than what you would buy new. If you have a local children’s consignment store, check them out. You won’t regret it!
3. I asked for formula samples. A friend told me every time I go to the pediatrician to ask for samples. Sure enough, I got full sized baby formula every time I went. Our doctor said they never ran out and they loved giving it away. Formula is expensive and it definitely took a huge bite out of our budget. The few samples we got were nice and helps alleviate some of the pressure.
4. I never buy kids meals. My kids still don’t eat a lot and portions in restaurants are ridiculous. So, I never order my kids separate meals. They always eat off our plates and are completely full when we go home.
