The other day a good friend posted a deal on some 1600 thread count Egyptian “cotten” sheets from a daily deal website and I immediately bought them. I patiently waited for them to come in the mail, washed them and put them on our bed anticipating the best night’s sleep EVER. Ughhh, I couldn’t be more wrong. They were HORRIBLE. They were almost as thin as vellum, they slipped off the mattress all night and they just weren’t comfortable. I was so mad. I wasn’t mad at my friend who recommended them, the people who made the sheets or the daily deal website. I was mad at myself, because if I’d some just a little bit of research, I’d have seen they weren’t a good purchase.
Here are some steps you can use when you can’t look before you buy. These tips really would have helped me.
1. Check out the reviews. Nowadays everything is reviewed online. If I had done a quick Google search of my product, I would have seen all negative reviews and wouldn’t have wasted the money. However, I let my excitement drown out my inner Thrifty Divas. NEVER again will I forgo the reviews for thinking I’m getting the best deal imaginable.
2. Check with friends. It never fails to just ask your Facebook friends if they’ve ever tried “x” product and I bet more than half of the time someone has and can give you their opinion. We did this with our Soda Stream and to this day, it’s been one of the best “gadgets” we’ve ever bought. If it hadn’t have been for the recommendations from friends, I am not sure we would have bought one. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising because it’s most likely the truth you’ll line up with for the product. Ask your friends for sure!
3. Check the return policy. If an online store doesn’t allow returns or there are a lot of red tape to go through, rethink buying it. With the daily deal websites like I purchased my sheets on, it’s harder to return things. It’s still worth buying things on those websites, but just know returns are harder and sometimes impossible.
