There are a few things we can do to make our homes safer. This goes for those of us living in apartments as well. Here are a few tips to get started.
These are more for those of us that live on the ground floor, though I wouldn't rule out second or third floors. We once actually had a balcony climber try to break in. These can be bought in some home improvement or hardware sections of a store. Of course if they break the window, that is another matter entirely.
Make sure doors are made of wood before renting an apartment. I know it sounds odd, but a wooden door is harder to break through than a glass one. I also check to make sure a deadbolt and a chain is installed on the door. I also check to see what the policy is on adding extra locks depending on where I am looking to live.
Always get renter's insurance no matter how great of a neighborhood you are moving into. Renter's insurance helps people who live in apartments to get reimbursed for things that are stolen from their apartments. You'll have a deductable, but should you go through a major robbery (or disaster), it'll be well worth that monthly payment to replace all of your belongings.
